The break in structure, academic pressures, and changes in social dynamics can bring added stress, especially when students aren’t sure how to cope with these shifts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It may be tempting to completely abandon the usual schedule during school breaks, but keeping some elements of routine can help kids and college students feel more grounded. This could be as simple as waking up at a similar time each day, eating balanced meals, or setting aside time for study or reading. Keeping a loose routine can provide a sense of control and reduce stress.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mental and physical health are deeply intertwined, so it’s important to continue practicing self-care during the break. Encourage kids, teens, and college students to stay active with exercise, eat nutritious meals, and prioritize rest. Even a short walk every day can promote relaxation. Additionally, relaxation techniques like mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can help manage stress and anxiety. Teaching these practices to younger students or encouraging older students to practice on their own can offer them valuable tools to reduce tension.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Helping Kids Cope with Divorce</image:title>
<image:caption>Divorce affects every child differently. Some kids become more withdrawn, while others act out. Some might struggle with anxiety, school performance, or even physical symptoms like stomachaches. And while younger children may not fully understand what’s happening, older kids may internalize feelings of guilt or anger. Common emotions kids experience during divorce include: Confusion: “Why is this happening?” Sadness: Mourning the life they knew before. Anger: Feeling powerless about the situation. Guilt: Thinking they caused the separation. Fear: Worrying about what the future will look like. The biggest concern for most kids is stability. They need to know that even though their family dynamic is changing, they are still safe and loved. That’s where therapy can be a huge help.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Helping Kids Cope with Divorce - Here’s how it can make a difference:</image:title>
<image:caption>Providing a Safe Space to Express Feelings Kids don’t always tell parents exactly how they’re feeling—sometimes because they don’t want to add to your stress. A therapist offers a neutral, judgment-free space where they can say what’s on their mind without fear of upsetting anyone. Helping Kids Understand It’s Not Their Fault One heartbreaking reality is that some kids believe they caused the divorce. Therapy helps them work through those thoughts and understand that the separation is an adult decision, not a reflection of anything they did.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Helping Kids Cope with Divorce - Even with therapy, your support as a parent is huge. Here are some key ways you can help:</image:title>
<image:caption>Keep routines as consistent as possible. Structure helps kids feel secure, so try to maintain bedtime, school routines, and traditions. Encourage open communication. Let them talk about their feelings without judgment—even if what they say is tough to hear. Reassure them of your love. Kids need constant reminders that even though the family is changing, your love for them never will.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Helping Kids Cope with Divorce - Looking Forward with Hope</image:title>
<image:caption>There’s an old saying: “When one door closes, another opens.” While divorce marks the end of one chapter, it also opens the door to new beginnings—for both you and your child. With love, patience, and support (including therapy when needed), children can move forward with confidence, knowing that while their family may look different, they are still deeply loved and supported. So if your child is struggling, don’t hesitate to seek help. Therapy can be a guiding light during this transition, helping them heal, grow, and thrive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Helping Kids Heal from Bullying with Therapy - The Emotional Toll of Bullying</image:title>
<image:caption>Bullying isn’t just “kids being kids.” It can leave deep emotional scars, affecting a child’s self-esteem, mental health, and even their ability to trust others. It might show up as anxiety, depression, withdrawal from activities they once loved, or even physical symptoms like headaches and stomachaches. Some kids start believing the cruel words thrown at them, and that’s where things get dangerous. As a counselor, I often hear kids say, “Maybe if I were different, they wouldn’t pick on me.” That breaks my heart every time. No child should feel like they have to change who they are to be treated with kindness. The problem isn’t them—it’s the bullying. And that’s where therapy comes in.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Helping Kids Heal from Bullying with Therapy - How Child Therapy in Indianapolis Helps Kids Process Bullying</image:title>
<image:caption>Therapy isn’t just about talking—it’s about healing. When a child works with a therapist, they gain tools to understand their emotions, rebuild their self-worth, and develop resilience. Here’s how therapy can help: Creating a Safe Space to Talk Kids don’t always open up to parents right away—sometimes they worry about upsetting you or don’t have the words to explain what’s happening. A therapist provides a judgment-free zone where they can share their feelings without fear. Challenging Negative Thoughts A big part of therapy is helping kids recognize that bullying doesn’t define them. If a child starts believing the insults they hear, therapy can help them replace those negative thoughts with positive, realistic ones. Instead of thinking, “I’m not good enough,” they can learn to say, “I am worthy of kindness and respect.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Helping Kids Heal from Bullying with Therapy - How Parents Can Help</image:title>
<image:caption>If your child has been bullied, you might feel helpless—but trust me, your support makes all the difference. Here’s what you can do: Listen without judgment. Let them talk, and resist the urge to jump in with solutions right away. Validate their feelings. Saying “That sounds really hard” instead of “Just ignore them” helps them feel heard. Encourage therapy as a strength, not a punishment. Therapy isn’t for kids who are “broken”—it’s for kids who deserve to feel strong and happy again. Be patient. Healing isn’t instant, but with time, love, and support, your child will bounce back.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Does My Kid Need Therapy? - 1. Changes in Mood</image:title>
<image:caption>If your child seems persistently sad, irritable, or anxious, it could be a sign that they’re struggling emotionally. Occasional bad days are normal, but if these feelings linger for weeks or months, it’s worth paying attention. Example: Your typically cheerful child suddenly becomes withdrawn and cries frequently over small frustrations. They may express feelings like, “I’m not good at anything” or “Nobody likes me.” What to do: Start by gently asking your child how they’re feeling. Avoid judgment or trying to “fix” things right away. If their mood doesn’t improve, consider reaching out to a mental health professional.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Does My Kid Need Therapy? - 3. Changes in Sleep or Appetite</image:title>
<image:caption>Significant changes in your child’s sleep patterns or eating habits can be signs of stress, anxiety, or depression. Example: Your child suddenly has trouble falling asleep, wakes up frequently during the night, or starts refusing meals they used to enjoy. What to do: Establish consistent routines around meals and bedtime. If the changes persist, a therapist can help uncover and address potential causes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Does My Kid Need Therapy? - 7. Talking About Self-Harm or Expressing Hopelessness</image:title>
<image:caption>Statements about self-harm, wanting to disappear, or feeling hopeless should always be taken seriously, even if they seem like an exaggeration. Example: Your child says things like, “I wish I wasn’t here” or “Nobody would care if I disappeared.” What to do: Stay calm and let your child know you’re there for them. Seek immediate professional help from a therapist or counselor.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The holiday season is meant to be a time for fun, family, and relaxation, but for many teens, it can also bring a mix of stress, loneliness, and even pressure. With the school year ending, family obligations piling up, and the expectations that come with the holidays, it’s easy for teens to feel overwhelmed. As a parent, guardian, or adult in their life, it’s important to help them navigate this time of year. Here’s how to support your teen during winter break and the busy holiday season.</image:caption>

Don’t over-schedule: It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the season, but don’t push your teen to go to every family event or holiday party. Balance is key.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Building Resilience Through Life’s Changes: Practical Tips for Everyday Strength</image:title>
<image:caption>Life constantly brings change—sometimes it’s exciting, like starting a new job or school, while at other times it can feel overwhelming, like facing personal challenges or moving to a new city. Building resilience, or the ability to bounce back from setbacks, is key to handling these changes. Change is a part of life. The more we can learn to accept it, the easier it becomes to handle. Try to see change as an opportunity for growth rather than something to fear or avoid. For instance, if you’re starting a new job, view it as a chance to learn new skills or meet interesting people. By shifting your perspective this way, you not only reduce the stress of the transition but also give yourself the chance to see its potential benefits. When you’re facing big changes, it’s normal to feel isolated. Staying connected with friends, family, or a support group can help tremendously. Talking with people you trust, sharing your concerns, and just having someone listen can lighten the emotional load. Knowing that others are there for you can make the journey feel a bit less daunting. For example, if you’re moving to a new area, a quick call with an old friend can provide reassurance and make you feel less alone in the transition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Adjusting to change takes time. It’s completely normal to feel unsteady or unsure at first. Resilience doesn’t mean you won’t feel stress—it just means that you have the strength to move through it and keep going. Give yourself grace and be patient, recognizing that adapting is a process. Allow yourself to take small steps, and remind yourself that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. This approach, focused on kindness and patience, supports long-term resilience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Both of my parents weren’t the most emotionally available growing up. They both were dealing with their own mental health struggles, making it difficult for them to be there for me and in tune with my emotions. I can have perspective on this as an adult, but as a kid I thought it was my fault they didn’t pay more attention to me. My dad, in particular, has schizophrenia. This causes him to hear voices and experience paranoia, such as wondering if others are talking about him.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Anxiety's Exit Strategy: EMDR to the Rescue - Ann Robinson (she/her), LCSW, is a trauma therapist, coach, and clinical supervisor licensed in Indiana and Colorado. Ann has a knack for working with women who exude enough grit and resilience to make Wonder Woman blush. Her secret weapon? Incorporating humor into therapy sessions because, let’s face it, life’s too short to take everything so seriously. Ann’s got your back if you’re ready to cope with life stressors without burning the candle at both ends. Ann has a rockin' email list (that I swear isn’t spammy) and can be found on Facebook or her website. When she’s not busy helping her clients navigate life’s ups and downs, you can find her hanging out with her family and dogs, Eleanor and Otis, gardening, or spending time in her community.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Embracing Empowerment: Breaking Free from Guilt and Shame in Saying "No" to Your Parents - Self-imposed pressure can be a relentless taskmaster, dictating our every move. When we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves as adult children, we become entrapped in a cycle of guilt and shame. It's crucial to challenge the notion that we must meet certain benchmarks or fulfill predetermined roles to be worthy of love and respect. Embracing vulnerability and authenticity allows us to release these burdensome expectations and build a more fulfilling relationship with our parents—one that is based on mutual understanding and unconditional love. The journey to breaking free from guilt and shame around saying no to our parents is not a linear one, and it requires patience, compassion, and self-reflection. As we continue to navigate adulthood, we must remind ourselves that we are not betraying our family but rather, embarking on a path of personal growth and self-discovery. By nurturing our well-being, honoring our boundaries, and seeking support from like-minded peers, we can foster an environment that encourages healthy communication and nurtures the bonds that tie us to our parents. Embracing the courage to say no and setting the stage for open and respectful dialogues, we can create relationships built on love, trust, and the freedom to be our authentic selves.</image:title>

<image:caption>EMDR is a therapy modality that aims to change the way a client perceives a past traumatic or unpleasant life event by replacing the client’s negative cognitions (negative core beliefs about themselves) with healthier, positive beliefs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>EMDR is an eight-phase experience that counselors will guide clients through. In the first few phases, the counselor will provide psychoeducation on the EMDR process and ask thoughtful questions in order to gather information about the client’s history, triggers, and negative beliefs. This will look like a simple conversation between the client and the clinician.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What happens in an EMDR session? An Overview by Celia Sadjadi at Indiana Counseling and Resilience Center - Will EMDR be painful?</image:title>
<image:caption>The physical application of bilateral stimulation will not be painful; you are using taps on the body, these touches will be firm, but gentle. It is self-administered by the client, with the guidance of the EMDR therapist. The most common “side effect” is occasionally feeling a little sleepy after an EMDR session.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breathing techniques to relieve anxiety for kids, teens, and adults! - Lion’s Breath</image:title>
<image:caption>Lion’s Breath is a type of yogic breathing that can be fun and engaging for young children (or adults)! To practice Lion’s Breath, sit in a comfortable seated position. Take a deep inhale through the nose for 3-5 seconds, filling up the lungs and belly. You will open the mouth and stick out the tongue, exhaling loudly and powerfully for as long as you can. Repeat this for 5-10 breath cycles. The loud exhales mimic a lion’s roar, and making these sounds can be enjoyable for children and help release tension for adults. This breathing exercise helps calm the mind and can be used to energize the body.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Breathing techniques to relieve anxiety for kids, teens, and adults! - Square Breathing</image:title>
<image:caption>Square breathing is a technique that can help the body and mind. To practice square breathing, find a comfortable seated position and sit tall, feeling the crown of the head lifting up, relaxing through the shoulders, and feeling the seat rooted into the ground. You can keep your eyes closed or perhaps soften your gaze. You will begin by taking a deep inhale through the nose for four seconds. You will then hold your breath for four seconds. Then, breathe out the mouth for four seconds. Feel your shoulders relax as you release the air out. For the final four seconds, check in with your body and mind. How did that breath feel? Are you feeling any tightness or tension in the body? What emotions are you experiencing? The magic number of square breathing is 4! All breaths are a four count, and you will repeat the breathing strategy four total times.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bumble-bee breath is another technique that can be enjoyable for children! Begin by finding a comfortable seated position, lifting the crown of the head to the sky while also relaxing the shoulders. Inhale through your nose. Instead of exhaling through your open mouth, press the teeth together and use your breath to create a buzzing sound, similar to the sounds of buzzing bees! Buzz as long as possible, feeling the sensation in the teeth and the mouth as you empty out your lungs. This breathing exercise helps calm the mind and can be used to energize the body!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rest and recharge after work. For those of you in particularly stressful work environments, it can be helpful to have things to look forward to after work and on your days off, that you find enjoyable, enriching, and reduces the sense that your life is only about work. Pursuing hobbies, exercising, spending time with friends and family, taking weekend trips as you can, and going to events like concerts and festivals are a few examples of what can help give you a sense of “working to live” instead of “living to work”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Overcoming Social Anxiety: Tips for Navigating Social Situations with Confidence - Own your awkwardness.</image:title>
<image:caption>People feel more comfortable around someone that is not perfect. Furthermore, you being your authentic, awkward self can help a fellow awkward person feel more comfortable to be themselves and less alone. Taking this a step further, acknowledging your awkwardness or social missteps can actually make you feel more confident. This could be in the form of playfully making fun of yourself (not in a way that negatively affects your self-esteem). I have found people often respond warmly when I do this and also often relate to whatever I am making fun of myself about.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Taking a 10 minute walk is better than nothing and if you need to you can cry and walk at the same time. Consider asking a friend to join you to both hold you accountable and benefit from having the company. Alternatively, walking alone can help you reflect and process. Consider also listening to music while walking that helps you relax, feel a bit happier, and/or work through the breakup. One caveat to be mindful of is limiting upsetting music that can lead to dwelling and falling further into depression.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How does Trauma Impact Our Relationships? A Trauma Therapist Indianapolis, IN, Explains. - As a therapist in Indianapolis, IN, I have seen firsthand the impact that trauma can have on relationships. Trauma can impact attachment, or emotional bond, between people. Childhood relationships often shape the way we get along with our partners as adults. Past experiences of not having emotional or physical needs met can cause increased anxiety, issues with trust, or difficulty feeling emotionally close to others. Without therapy, trauma survivors may feel lonely and misunderstood. We can learn more about and make improvements to our attachment to others through therapy. The first step is to understand more about your attachment style. Read more about the four styles below. You can also take a short quiz to learn about your attachment style on The Attachment Project website.</image:title>
