OUR APPROACH TO WORKING WITH COUPLES IN COUPLES COUNSELING
Indiana Counseling and Resilience Center couples therapists use many different strategies depending on the needs and goals of couples counseling. Your therapist may use Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT), which is an attachment-based approach that improves success with managing emotions and building a secure attachment.
Your couples therapist may use the Gottman Method for couples therapy. This approach works to improve communication and resolve conflicts, build emotional connection and fun, develop shared life goals and dreams, and build a strong foundation of trust. Both of these approaches are effective in supporting couples in reaching their goals.
When there has been a betrayal or an affair, we work with you on stabilizing the relationship, managing symptoms that have been created due to the betrayal or affair, taking responsibility, rebuilding trust, and building a new story and improved relationship for moving forward. Occasionally, couples benefit from engaging in their own individual counseling alongside couples therapy. Issues like anxiety, depression, and past trauma can impact how we show up in our relationships. Working on these areas outside of couples therapy can indirectly improve the overall progress gained in counseling with your partner.
Couples Counseling Can Help You and Your Partner:
Communicate and listen more effectively
Decrease and manage conflicts
Work toward your shared life goals
Repair and heal past hurts and betrayals
Increase your friendship and emotional connection
Help your intimacy
FAQ: Common Questions About Couples Therapy
Things aren’t THAT bad, could we benefit from couples therapy anyway?
We get this question a lot. Like all counseling needs, there is a range of how “bad” someone views their situation. Often, couples put off coming to therapy until they’ve experienced a lot of tension, resentment, or betrayal. We can certainly help with this, and we can also help you with your relationship goals before things get to that point. If you’ve been looking for information on couples counseling, give us a call!
Do we have to be married?
No. Many different types of couples benefit from our couples therapy. We have worked with couples who are the opposite sex, same-sex, dating, cohabitating, engaged, married, separating, divorcing, and co-parenting. All are welcome.
What if I want couples therapy, but my partner isn’t interested?
There are sometimes differences in how interested and motivated each partner is in couples counseling. That is okay! If your partner isn’t ready, you can begin therapy individually to work on areas that are shown to improve relationships. Areas such as communication, problem-solving, resolving your own past experiences, or exploring your attachment style can all be helpful in improving how you show up in relationships. Often, there are strategies that you can start using at home to improve your relationship until your partner is motivated to engage in the counseling process.
Is couples therapy covered by insurance?
No, couples therapy is most often not covered by insurance companies as couples therapy is typically not treating a mental health/medical diagnosis.
