TRAUMA & PTSD THERAPY IN INDIANAPOLIS

ONLINE & IN PERSON COUNSELING IN INDY

You Don’t Have to Keep Carrying This

Trauma has a way of staying with you — long after the event is over. Maybe you find yourself on edge for no clear reason. Maybe certain sounds, smells, or situations send you right back to a moment you’d rather forget. Maybe you’ve been told to “just move on,” but no matter how hard you try, the past keeps showing up in your present.

You’re not broken. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do — protect you. But you deserve more than just surviving. You deserve to feel safe, grounded, and like yourself again.

At Indiana Counseling & Resilience Center, our trauma therapists in Indianapolis are here to help you get there.

What is Trauma?

Trauma isn’t defined by what happened — it’s defined by how it affected you. Experiences that can lead to trauma include:

  • Childhood abuse, neglect, or harmful experiences

  • Childhood bullying

  • Workplace harassment

  • Sexual assault or domestic violence

  • Accidents, medical events, or sudden loss of a loved one

  • Military combat or first responder stress

  • Witnessing violence or a traumatic event

  • Ongoing emotional abuse or toxic relationships

  • Foster care, adoption, or early attachment disruptions

You don’t have to have a “big T” trauma to struggle. Chronic stress and repeated painful experiences can be just as impactful — and just as treatable.

We use evidence-based, body-informed methods that go beyond just talking about what happened. Our therapists are trained in:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) - One of the most well-researched trauma treatments available. EMDR helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge — without requiring you to relive them in detail.

Brainspotting - A powerful brain-body approach that locates where trauma is held in the body and uses focused eye positions to process and release it.

TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) - Specifically designed for children and teens (ages 18 and under), TF-CBT helps young people and their caregivers understand and work through traumatic experiences together.

IFS (Internal Family Systems) - Helps you understand the different “parts” of yourself — including the protective parts that developed in response to trauma — and build a compassionate relationship with your inner world.

EMDR Intensives - For those who want to move through trauma work more quickly, we offer extended 2–3 hour intensive sessions. These are especially effective for PTSD and complex trauma.

Common questions about trauma therapy

Will I have to go back and relive my trauma?

Some people want to tell their stories in detail. Others do not, and that is completely okay. You decide what you’re comfortable with in therapy.

Our therapists are very mindful to avoid re-traumatization in therapy and will support you in growth at your own pace.

Can I work on issues other than trauma?

Yes! We are here to help you with living the life you want. This may be focusing on your trauma or may include coping with stress at work, relationships, depression, grief, or other issues that may arise.

I’ve tried therapy before, what makes this different?

There are many ways to discuss trauma in therapy, but in order to make lasting changes and release the trauma the therapist needs to use evidence-based trauma treatments. Our therapists use two evidence-based trauma treatments, EMDR and TF-CBT.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a brain-based approach that helps to put past trauma in the past so it no longer interferes with your present life. You can read more on our EMDR page.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) has been proven effective in research studies and is considered one of the most highly effective trauma treatment modalities for children/teens.

We’re here to support you as you work through the past and embrace a healthy future.
